Control System Studio - CS-Studio
CS-Studio is a collaborative project
for user interface tools.
It allows you to access the control system of the SNS accelerator and instruments.
This is the legacy version of CS-Studio, based on Eclipse.
SNS had to stop updating it in May 2019.
We suggest that you switch to the current CS-Studio development, see
Phoebus.
Starting CS-Studio in Accelerator or Instrument Control Rooms
CS-Studio has been installed on
the SNS accelerator network (CCR),
in instrument control rooms, and on the analysis server.
If there isn't already a "CSS" icon on the desktop,
start CS-Studio by running "css" in a terminal window,
then follow the guidance given below on selecting the workspace,
navigating the 'Welcome' screen,
and doing your first steps.
Install CS-Studio on your own Computer
Download
To download Control System Studio onto your office computer or laptop,
for use at the SNS, on travel, or from home,
click one of the following to download the
latest nightly build of the SNS Office version.

When using it outside of SNS, you need a VPN connection to the ORNL network.
Windows Installation
- Download the ZIP file for Windows
to somewhere on your computer, for example the desktop.
Windows 7 users with 64-bit Java should download the
64-bit version of CS-Studio for Windows.
- Unpack the ZIP file. With the default Windows XP setup:
- Right-click on the downloaded ZIP file
- Select "Extract All ..."
- Click "Next"
- Enter the directory name were you want to place it,
for example "Browse" to your "Desktop"
- Click "Next", wait for extraction, "Finish"
You may delete the original zip file.
- Inside the extracted directory,
there is a "css" application that you
can start by double-clicking on it.
Mac OS X Installation
- Download the ZIP file for Mac OS X.
- Double-click to unpack. The ZIP file expands into a "Css.app" directory,
which the Finder might show as just a "Css" application.
If you want, you can drag it into your Applications folder.
- When opening the "Css" app for the first time,
use control-click on the "Css" app and then select "Open" from the context menu.
You might see a dialog warning that the app has been downloaded.
Select "Open" in that dialog.
- From now on, simply double-clicking the "Css" app should start it.

Linux Installation
- Download the ZIP file for Linux (32 or 64 bit depending on your OS).
- Unpack, which creates a "CSS_{version number}" directory.
- Inside the CS-Studio directory, there is a "css" application that you
can run as usual. There's also an "icon.xmp" icon file that you
can use when creating desktop or panel links to the application.

Upon startup, the application prompts for a "Workspace" location.
(In case CS-Studio does not start up, see Known Issues)
On your office computer, as the only CS-Studio user,
you can uncheck the "Ask again?" option and press "OK" to accept the default
('CSS-Workspaces/Default' in your home directory).
If several users run CS-Studio on the same computer, they best pick
individual workspaces, for example 'CSS-Workspaces/Fred',
'CSS-Workspaces/Jane' etc., to avoid errors when trying to
use the same workspace from more than one CS-Studio instance.
In a running CS-Studio instance, use the menu 'File/Switch Workspace...' to
get the location of the current workspace, or to change to a different
one.
In addition, command-line options can select the workspace, or re-enable
the initial workspace dialog. Run CS-Studio with "-help" from the
command-line to see more.

When you start CS-Studio for the first time, you will see a "Welcome" screen.
You may follow its links to read the Overview etc.,
but to get going you may also simply close that welcome screen by clicking the 'x'
indicated by the arrow in this screenshot.
You can always re-open the welcome screen via the menu entry "Help", "Welcome"
if you want to read it at a later point in time.
View Operator Displays
Use either the tool bar button shown above or the menu "File", "Top Files"
to open the top-level display for the accelerator or instruments.
View Archived Data
Open the menu "Help", "Help Content".
Look for "CSS Applications", "Trends", "Data Browser", and check the sections on getting started.
